Czersk

Czersk – one of the oldest towns and the oldest centre of Christianity in the southwest Masovia. There are ruins of a Gothic castle erected in the second half of the 14th century. Three characteristic towers over the Vistula River bank – two round turrets (southern and western) and a rectangular gate tower, as well as some sections of castle walls, have been preserved until today. The gate tower has four storeys and 20 metres of height. The bridge leading to the gate over the moat was constructed upon the order of Marshal Franciszek Bieliński in 1762. The castle is particularly attractive for the view of the local areas from the top of the tower. From the lower border of Czersk situated on the slope of the Vistula River valley to the embankment of the river, there are large apple tree orchards. A trip to Czersk is an unforgettable experience, particularly in the end of April and in the beginning of May, during the blooming period of apple trees. The castle is open for visitors from 8 am to 8 pm between April and September and from 8 am to 6 pm between October and March (telephone number: +48 22-727 35 22).

The oldest traces of settlements in the region of the castle hill are dated around the beginning of the Common Era. In the 11th century, there was already a gord. Czersk was conferred civic rights before 1350. In 13th century, the town was the seat of the castellan, while the castle was the residence of the Dukes of Masovia. In 1247, the town became the capital of the Duchy of Czersk. In 1252, the seat of the archdeaconry was moved to Czersk from Grójec. Czersk was also the town through which major trade routes - from Pomerania to Rus and from Masovia to Silesia – were led. It also had a Vistula crossing. The importance of the town decreased on the turn of the 15th century.

The historic, medieval urban development of Czersk, including the town square and the arrangement of streets, is still clearly visible. The two major streets are former routes to Warsaw (current name: Warszawska) and to Warka (current name: Warecka).

In the vicinity of the castle, there is a small Parish Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus, situated on the northern hill. It was erected in the years 1805-1806 and reconstructed in 1900, according to the design by Konstanty Wojciechowski. The church was constructed in the historic site of the old parish church. According to historic documents, the Parish of Czersk was established as early as in the 13th century.
